The Rise of Candida Infections

The growing global health challenge of Candida infections 🍄

Candida infections are increasingly recognized as a significant global health threat, with 7 out of 10 cases attributed to Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, and Candida tropicalis.

This alarming trend results in approximately 200,000 deaths each year due to invasive and disseminated disease, particularly among susceptible populations.

WHO Surveillance Priority

C. auris and C. albicans have been designated as Critical Priority Fungal Pathogens by the World Health Organization, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced surveillance and prevention measures.

Candida glabrata and Candida tropicalis have been designated as High Priority Group.

C. auris : An Emerging Superbug

Recent epidemiological data show a concerning 95% increase in C. auris cases reported in Europe and a 60% increase in the United States. These increases are associated with high mortality rates, especially among vulnerable populations.

Transmission Risks

C. auris can be spread to surfaces by anyone, regardless of whether they are infected, thereby posing a risk of infection to others. The pathogen is notably drug-resistant, with 90% of isolates exhibiting resistance to at least one antifungal treatment, and 30% resistant to two or more antifungals.

Innovative Detection with CHROMagar™ Candida Plus 🔍

CHROMagar™ Candida Plus is an advanced chromogenic medium specifically designed for the detection and differentiation of major clinical Candida species, including C. auris.

Key features include:

    • Sensitivity: Approximately 100%

    • Specificity Approximately 100%

The medium allows for the identification of C. auris with unique color differentiation:

        • C. auris : Light blue with blue halo (front); blue from the back

        • C. albicans : Green-blue

        • C. krusei : Pink and fuzzy

        • C. tropicalis : Metallic blue with pink halo

        • C. glabrata : Mauve

          Advantages of CHROMagar™ Candida Plus

        • Cost-Effective : Reduces the need for multiple tests or specialized media, lowering overall costs.

        • Rapid Results : Interpret results within 24-48 hours of aerobic incubation at 30-37 °C.

        • High Specificity : Enables precise differentiation of common Candida species with high specificity.
